The Madras Carnegie Challenge

The English Department and the Library invite you to tackle The Carnegie Challenge: to read many, if not all, of the 6 books on The Carnegie Medal Shortlist.

The competition begins Monday,16th May, or as soon as you can. The Critics Group will gather for the final Judging , to decide on the Madras winning book, at the end of June.

Carnegie values the opinions of its young reviewers. You and your fellow Madras judges will be shadowing the official adult Judging Panel who will announce the medal winner in mid-July. The organisation encourages school reviewers- the literary critics of the future, perhaps - to post individual short responses through their website. The English Dept. and the Library will encourage and support you in this e-mailing process, making time for this within English wherever possible. It won’t involve lunch hours or losing your morning break! It will mean you have top priority access to 6 really new books, all very different.

Which book will you rate most highly? And why?
What will be the interesting or off putting points about each book?
We really want to hear from readers like yourselves who can
a) read books quickly but thoughtfully.
b) respond with opinions and lively comment.

Note: Bronze, Silver and Gold Certificates will be on offer, along with fame (sorry, no fortune) in photographs, newspaper coverage etc at the Grand Final.
