HISTORY

The earliest reference we can find to this activity is in an article in the Journal of Recreational Mathematics Vol 8 (2) , 1975 - 76 entitled 'Treat 1975 in an orderly fashion" by Mary Sullivan, Joanne Costello and Margaret Kenney from Boston College Mathematics Institute, Massachusetts. Solutions are given for 1 - 100 using 1 , 9 , 7 and 5 although they had to fall back on some dubious tricks eg .1) 9 meaning .1 divided into 9 and [7/5] meaning the greatest integer less than or equal to 7/5.
