The British Maths Olympiad Round 2 1998

Round 2 of the British Maths Olympiad is an important stage in the selection of the UK team for the International Mathematical Olympiad. All of the 95 candidates were chosen as a result of their extremely good results in BMO Round 1 and so necessarily has to be a particularly tough paper to differentiate between candidates. There were only 4 questions for 10 marks each with a 3hour 30min time limit.. Of the 95 candidates that qualified 7 were from Scotland with 3 of these 7 from Madras College!

Our student Luke Halliwell, for the second year running, has been invited along with 19 other students to attend an intensive Olympiad Training Session to be held at Trinity College, Cambridge from Thursday 2 April to Sunday 5 April. This session will end with an IMO-type 4hour 30min paper, after which the UK team of six students will be selected. They will represent the UK in the International Mathematical Olympiad to be held in Taipei, Taiwan during the period 13-21 July. Over 70 countries will be sending teams to this major international event. We wish Luke well in his bid for the team!

Also congratulations to our students Jenny and Alan for their excellent showing in this contest.
