The British Maths Olympiad 1997

There were 750 qualifiers for this years BMO each having gained a sufficiently high score in the UK Senior Maths Challenge ( formerly the National Maths Contest ) which was held last November. Scotland had 16 qualifiers from 11 schools and with 4 qualifiers Madras College gained the distinction of having more qualifiers than any other Scottish school.

The BMO is a 3hr30min paper consisting of 5 questions with a maximum total of 50 marks available. In terms of the Scottish results our qualifiers acheived remarkable success:

Luke Halliwell (S5)

1st in Scotland

45marks

Graham Redman (S6)

6th= in Scotland

22marks

Richard Alexander (S6)

9th in Scotland

18marks

Even more remarkable was Luke Halliwell's resullt. His score placed him 13th= in the UK and earned him not only a prize but an invite to the BMO Round 2. This further round marks the beginning of the serious selection process for the 1997 UK International Olympiad Team. From the results of this further round 20 students will be selected for training and further testing before the UK International Maths Olympiad team is chosen to compete in Argentina in July 97.
