The British Maths Olympiad 1999

This year 20 Scottish students qualified for the British Maths Olympiad having gained a sufficiently high score in the UK Senior Maths Challenge which was held last November. Three of these qualifiers were from Madras College. In Mid-January they sat a 3hr30min paper consisting of five 10 mark questions allowing a total allocation of 50 marks. The paper proved to be an extremely tough paper this year with the marks returned by all 990 UK qualifiers considerably lower than in recent years. Our three Madras qualifiers achieved the following scores:

Sue Liu (S4)

2nd in Scotland

11 marks

Alan Riddell (S6)

8th in Scotland

5 marks

Oliver Glidewell (S6)

9th in Scotland

4 marks

It is nice to see Sue Liu achieving such success at this early stage in her Maths career. Congratulations to all our contestants on their effort and enthusiasm.
