Every year at the end of June teams of four enthusiastic students from each of the Fife secondary schools gather at the Teacher's Resource Centre in Cardenden to participate in the Fife Enterprising Mathematics Contest. The teams consist of two S2 students and two S3 students. The teams are competing for the honour of representing Fife in the National Enterprising Mathematics Event in Edinburgh later in the year.
This year the contest took place on Friday 25th June. Our 1999 Madras Enterprising Maths team consisting of Liam Cambell(S2), Joe Neilson(S2), Toby Gilbertson(S3) and David Stephens(S3) were the winners of the closely fought contest.
The teams participated in three rounds of challenging problems. In the first round, our team worked well both individually and as a team to answer the questions. At the end of this round they lay in second place. The second round tests the team's spatial awareness and abilities in mental calculations. After tghis round they were were again in second place, trailing Bell Baxter High School by only three points. In the final round the team was under great pressure with 25 questions to be answered in a relay race. Showing excellent collaberation skills and timpressive quick wits the team finally finished in first place, with Bell Baxter High School a very close second. Both teams well deserve their places in the National Final to be held in Edinburgh in November. So congratulations to our hard working team - Liam Cambell, Joe Neilson, Toby Gilbertson and David Stephens and we wish them well in November.
