The 2000 Invitational Mathematical Challenge

The UK Schools Intermediate Maths Challenge held on 3rd February this year involved around 150000 students from the S3/S4 age range. Around 1000 contestants who performed exceptionally well in this contest were then invited to sit the International Invitational Intermediate Maths Challenge.

This year we had two S4 students, David Stephens and Toby Gilbertson, who gained a place in this prestigious 2nd round contest. On Thursday 4th May they sat an extremely demanding 2 hour paper consisting of only 5 questions worth a total of 50 marks. Success in just one question is noteworthy and our student Toby Gilbertson achieved this success and also succeeded in partially solving a further question. For completely solving two questions (20 marks) a Certificate of Distinction is awarded. It is a measure of the difficulty of the paper that only around 100 candidates achieved Distinction. Our student David Stephen gained Distinction by completely solving two questions and part of a third. This remarkable performance produced the only Distinction awarded to a Scottish candidate in his Age Group (Year 11).

Congratulations to both David and Toby on their tremendous effort in this contest.
