Mathematique sans Frontiere 98

The Mathematique sans Frontiere Contest is a truly European annual event involving tens of thousands of students from all European countries. Teams of students are entered from individual schools competing by age groups in National Sections of the Contest. On the day of the contest the team is faced with a collection of ten or more tough problems to solve. They are allowed 90 minutes at the end of which they present their final draft solutions to as many questions as possible. However there is a slight twist. One of the questions is presented in a foreign language and must be answered in that language. As a result the team not only requires top rate mathematicians but also first rate linguists!

Madras College for the first time this year entered two teams for the contest, one from S4 and one from S5. At the prize-giving ceremony at Heriot-Watt University on Thursday 18 June it was announced that each of our two teams had won 2nd prize in their respective age groups in the Scottish Section of the Contest. The prizes include a total of £400 to the Maths Department along with various prizes for the individual members of the teams. Congratulations to both our teams on their outstanding performance.
