On Tuesday 29th April this year 75 of our S1 and S2 students sat the UK Junior Mathematical Challenge contest. The contest is organised by the UK Mathematics Trust and this year the Junior contest attracted over 200000 entrants. This was a record level of entries and makes it the largest UK Maths Contest. The paper consists of 25 multiple choice questions. Success in the contest is rewarded by Gold, Silver or Bronze awards, with cut-off marks for the awards being set on a national basis. Approximately the top 6% gain Gold, the next 12% gain Silver and a further 18% gaining Bronze. A quite remarkable total of 58 awards were gained by Madras College contestants this year. This is the highest number of awards Madras College contestants have received in this contest. There were 21 Gold awards, 20 Silver and 17 Bronze. A special mention and congratulations go to Ruth Aitken in S1 for achieving the top score out of all of our contestants. Her score was sufficiently high for her to be invited to sit the prestigious Junior Mathematical Olympiad. This will be held on Tuesday 10th June and we wish her all the best in this further round. In addition to her Gold award she receives a special 'Best in School' award. The Gold award winners will receive their awards at a suitable S1/S2 assembly soon. The Silver / Bronze winners will receive their awards from their class teacher. Thanks to all contestants for their efforts and also to their teachers for their continuing support and encouragement.
