The UK Mathematics Trust runs the annual UK Maths Challenge contests. There are three sections: Junior for S1 and S2 (this is normally held at the end of April), Intermediate and Senior for S5 and S6 (held in November). This year 103 Madras College students from S3 and S4 participated in the Intermediate Section which was held on Thursday 1st February.
The results again this year for Madras College contestants were exceptionally good and continue the string of successes we have had in this contest in recent years. There were a total of 58 awards, the 2nd highest ever! These consisted of 8 Gold, 20 Silver and 30 Bronze awards. What should be noted is the fact that the cut-off scores for these awards are determined nationally usually on the basis of the top 6% gaining Gold, the next 12% gaining Silver and the next 18% gaining Bronze. We would like to congratulate all our contestants on their excellent performance.
Special congratulations must go to Robert Woollins (S3) whose score of 100 (out of 135) was sufficiently high for him to qualify for the prestigious follow-up 'IMOK Hamilton' (Olympiad Paper). In addition congratulations go to Steven Brown (S4), Jonathan Cameron(S4) and Katie James (S3) who all gained scores high enough to qualify them for the 'Pink Kangaroo' (a European follow-up Paper). In addition Robert Woollins was awarded the 'Best in School' Certificate.
In his IMOK Olympiad Paper on Thursday 15th March 2007 Robert Woollins gained a certificate of Merit - an outstanding achievement for an S3 pupil. Once again our congratulations to Robert on his success in this contest.
