The UK Senior Maths Challenge this had an increased entry of 80,560 students from 1886 schools and colleges throughout the UK. 92 Madras College students were entered for the contest all from S5 or S6. The contest consists of a 90 minute paper containing 25 challenging maths problems whose solution not only requires a high level of mathematical competency but also a fair mix of creative strategic thinking and 'lateral thinking' skills. So it was immensely rewarding to find that our overall total of 43 awards equalled the all-time high achieved last year. An astonishing 5 Gold, 17 Silver and 21 Bronze awards were gained by our young mathematicians. 22 Gold/Silver awards is an all-time record for Madras College. Over the last three years we have seen a spectacular rise in the overall number of awards gained by our contestants in this UK contest. Since the cut-off scores for awards are set on a national basis with around 6% gaining Gold, a further 14% gaining Silver and 21% gaining Bronze, these record number of awards are a significant and commendable achievement. It is also to see that three of the five Gold awards went to S5 students who were sitting the contest for the first time! Our congratulations go to all of our students who contributed to this magnificent result. Special congratulations go to Philip Woollins who not only gained a Gold Award and 'Best in School' Award but also, because of his exceptionally high score, automatically qualified for entry to the prestigious British Maths Olympiad.
