SENIOR MATHS CHALLENGE 2008

The UK Senior Maths Challenge this year involved 92,520 students from 1917 schools and colleges throughout the UK. Madras College entered 71 students from S5 or S6 and 4 from S4. The contest consists of a 90 minute paper containing 25 challenging maths problems whose solution not only requires a high level of mathematical competency but also a fair mix of creative strategic thinking and 'lateral thinking' skills. Our overall total of 33 awards consisted of 3 Gold, 5 Silver and 25 Bronze and was yet again another excellent haul of awards for our budding young mathematicians. Since the cut-off scores for awards are set on a national basis with around 6% gaining Gold, a further 14% gaining Silver and 21% gaining Bronze, these awards are a significant and commendable achievement. What was particularly impressive this year was that our three Gold award winners, Robert Woollins, Ian Johnston and Katie James, scored sufficiently highly to qualify for the prestigious British Maths Olympiad. It is many years since we last had this number qualifying for the BMO. Even more impressive is the fact that all three are S5 students who were sitting the senior contest for the first time! Our congratulations go to all of our students who contributed to this magnificent result. Special congratulations go to Robert Woollins who gained the 'Best in School' Award.
