All the King's Horses

Equipment:

A chess board or draughts (checker) board and several white counters (or ideally several white chess knights).

Number of players:

There are two players Left and Right.

The Set-up:

Players decide on the number of counters to use and on their initial positions.

A typical set up might be:

A Move:

At his move Left moves all counters on the board one move.

A move for Left is one of the two moves shown in the diagram..

At his move Right moves all counters on the board one move.

A move for Right is one of the two moves shown in the diagram..

It is allowable for several counters to occupy the same square. Players do not own any of the counters (they are owned by the King!) and each counter is moved by both players. Left starts first in the game.

You win:

If as a result of your move your opponent cannot move without one or more counters leaving the board.

Variations:

The Misere Version If on your move you can move a counter off the board then you win.

All the King's Horses with Pass If on your move a counter cannot move without leaving the board but your opponent could move the counter without it leaving the board then you are allowed a pass move for that particular counter. You must however make proper moves for all other counters. Notice that in this variation, if you designate the top left block of four squares as "home", you win by moving the first counter home.

All the King's Horses with Pass Misere The first counter "home" loses.

All the King's Horses Impartially In this variant all four possible moves of the counters are legal for both players. And of course there is the Misere version of this variant too.
