Cutcake

Equipment:

A piece of squared paper

A pair of scissors

Number of players:

2

The Set-up:

A rectangular piece of squared paper represents the cake

Agree on the size of the cake ( number of rows and columns on the piece of paper).

A Move:

Players are X and Y

X cuts along the East-West grid lines (parallel to the x-axis) and Y cuts along the North-South grid lines (parallel to the y-axis)

A move consists of picking one piece of cake and cutting it along a grid line in your allowed direction.

You must be careful not to turn pieces around. They must always retain their original orientation:

How to win:

If your opponent has no valid move then you win. Can you figure out who wins in the game above?

Variations:

Maundy Cake: A move consists of dividing one piece of cake into any number of equal pieces (still only cutting in your allowed direction of course!)

Impartial Maundy Cake: Played as Maundy Cake but either player can divide the cake in either direction.

Cutcakes: In this variant a player must pick all existing cakes and cut each one in their allowed direction. This means that the first player to produce the kind of cake in which his opponent has no legal move is the winner.
