Problem Solving

Student Activities:
  1. Fill and Pour Two containers: fill them, empty them or pour one into the other. Can you reach the target volume? (Utah State Univ, NLVM)
  2. Do you want to be a Maths Millionaire? Shockwave (counton.org)
  3. Mathematics Problems and Warm-ups A large mixed collection. Choose one, solve it and then check your solution!
  4. Try to grow Zoid or Circ or Rhombi or Tria (mathsonline.co.uk) Can you get the food mix right to beat the all time record?

Teaching Resources:
  1. Archimedes in his bath An excellent simulation showing a dynamic graph of water level in a bath against time. You have control of events: turn tap on/off, open/close plug, put/take archimedes in/out of bath. Great source of class discussion
  2. Try the Alien Plants Simulation. Different amounts of different foods have a dramatic effect on growth. A graph of the outcome can be produced. (mathsonline.co.uk)
  3. Triangle Classification Where should the third vertex go to create different types of triangles? Investigate! Includes dynamic side and angle measurements (illuminations.nctm.org)
