National 4 and National 5 Biology
Pupils will progress with their study of Biology by looking studying three units of work.
Unit headings are the same for both National 4 – which is internally assessed, and National 5, which culminates in an external examination. Each unit has an end of unit test. These courses are taught entirely separately. Entry into either National 4 or National 5 will be determined by students' previous experience and attainment in their S3 exam.
The Units studied are;
- Cell Biology
- Multi-cellular Organisms
- Life on Earth
Further details about the N4 and N5 course contents and copies of the power-points and homework sheets are available to all pupils through the school's GLOW website. This requires a login.
The National 4 course includes the completion of an internally assessed 'Added Value' assignment and a practical. The National 5 includes a practical-based research assignment which is externally assessed.
National 4 students sit a 'Prognostication' examination in early January to determine a candidate's potential to proceed into National 5 the following year. At the same time, N5 pupils will sit their main preliminary exam. N5 also sit a supplementary prelim exam in mid-April.
